THE HISTORY OF
MOUNT OLIVE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

USHER MINISTRY

Psalm 84:10
For a day in your courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Our Purpose is to SERVE.
73 years of service.
Dedicated to accomplishing our goals.

1949

  • Olive Usher Board established by Mrs. Sarah Neal & Mrs. Lena Reid. They had a vision as they recognized the need for an Usher Board.
  • Original Members: Charlie Reid (President), Sarah Neal (Vice President), Lena Reid, Blandina Wilkes, Cora Carrothers, Willie Mae Jamison
  • Our next President was Queen Ester Grier with Myrtle Dixon serving with her.

1960 – 1980

  • 1960 – Chain Broken – Sarah Neal, First Vice President
  • 1966 – Chain Broken – Ada Horton
  • 1967 – Chain Broken – Mattie Miller
  • 1968 – Chain Broken – Lillian Grier
  • 1980 – Chain Broken – Mary Herron

 

1980’s

  • 1981- Junior Usher Board organized by Robbie Horton-Garriett with great participation.
  • 1981 – Chain Broken – Charlie Reid, First President
  • 1987 – Chain Broken – Lena Reid

1990’s

  • Membership extended to the Young Adults. Membership increased by three excited interested members who made a significant difference.
  • 1991 – Anna Withers & Viola Massey recognized the need for additional ushers and invited more children and youth to join. Ushering provides spiritual education
  • We have many inactive ushers that you may not see in uniform. We do not want to overlook them as they have at one point been faithful works, some due to illness, retirement, or higher education.  We acknowledge that you have made a difference in our organization and may you continue to do God’s work.
  • 1993 – Chain broken – Queen Ester Grier – Our beloved President
  • Viola Massey & Jerry Grier served as chairperson.
  • The Program Committee placed a plaque in the entrance of the church in memory of our deceased members.
  • 1995 – Chain Broken – Marjorie McLain
  • 1995 – Chain Broken -Theodosia Hill
  • 1996 – Chain Broken – Alice Kearns
  • This year we decided to present the families of our deceased members a resolution from the Usher Board.
  • Plaque placed at the entrance in memory and in honor of our founders.
  • 1997 – Refinished candle lobbers and purchased new lighters
  • 1998 – Chain Broken – Donald Reid
  • 1999 – Purchased a new stove with the help from the Reid family.
  • 1999 – Chain Broken – Willie Mae Jamison, Founding Member
  • 1999 – Celebrated 50 years of being doorkeepers in God’s house with an afternoon service

2000 – 2010

  • 2000 – Eddie Herron retired after 50 years of service 1949-1999
  • 2001 – Chain Broken – Myrtle Dixon
  • 2001 – Chain Broken – Brown Herron
  • 2001 – Voted to incorporate a compassionate fund within our ministry to assist our members. This fund enables us to assist many of our members with medication during their time of convalescence.
  • 2002 – The Usher Ministry continues to do God’s work through growth and training.
  • 2002 – Voted to change our uniform to a new black dress for the ladies.
  • 2002 – After much consideration, we are now the Usher’s Ministry instead of the Usher Board.
  • 2004 – Chain Broken – Lucille Davis
  • 2005 – Chain Broken – Aaron Horton
  • 2006 – Chain Broken – Doris Jean Belk
  • 2007 – Chain Broken – Ernest Calvin Grier, Past President
  • 2008 – Chain Broken – Benjamin Belk
  • 2009 – Chain Broken – Leon Grier
  • 2010 – Chain Broken – Blandina Wilkes – Founding Member – she will always remain in our hearts as she was the last of our organizers.

2011 – 2021

  • 2014 – Chain Broken – Thomas Wilkes, Jr. – A long-life member who will always be remembered as the one that helped everybody as a doorkeeper.
  • 2015 – Chain Broken – Anna Withers – A true and dedicated member. She was always on her post and believed in being a doorkeeper. Her mission for the ministry was to keep our plaques updated and contact those that were scheduled to be greeters on Sunday mornings.
  • 2015 – Chain Broken – Harry Richardson – lost his battle on earth and now is God’s doorkeeper.
  • 2016 – Chain Broken – Eddie Herron – retied member, who had a great appreciation for serving as a doorkeeper
  • 2018 – Chain Broken – Essie McLain – we will always remember her loving smile
  • 2019 – Chain Broken – Daryl Potts – served at the front door in his uniform until his hail declined
  • 2019 – Chain Broken – Zenobia Thompson – another dedicated member who retired due to her health after years of faithful service
  • 2020 – Chain Broken – Annie Lee Grier – A faithful and dedicated member even after retiring from the usher ministry
  • 2020 – Chain Broken – Viola Massey – retired member who was greatly appreciated for serving as a doorkeeper for many years and a president that shared knowledge to all to make the Usher Ministry what it is today.

Our Presidents

Each set an exemplary example for us to follow with their dedicated service and wiliness to make God’s house a temple for all to worship.  As Ushers, we are ready and willing to render our services for whatever the task
